PPF to cover A level students too

PPF Pension Fund public relations manager Lulu Mengele (R) briefs journalists in Dar es Salaam yesterday on achievements the Fund has made since it was set up just under 35 years ago. 

The Parastatal Pension Fund (PPF) has extended its ‘Education Benefit’ clause to now include ‘A’ level students of its members who pass away while in service but the fund has made clear that details into the expansion will be made public come October of this year, PPF’s 35th anniversary.

Only in April this year, the fund celebrated 10 years since the introduction of the ‘Education Benefit scheme’ which until now covered only nursery and primary school children and secondary (‘O’ level) school students.

Ten years ago the benefit was launched with only three children and now covers well over 1000 children attending some 765 schools in both Tanzania mainland and Zanzibar, out of which 315 are primary schools and 450 are secondary schools both private and government owned.

Last year alone, the Fund reported having spent a total of 682m/- to cover school fees of more than 1,330 children whose parents passed away and had given the fund at least 3 years worth of contributions.

Thanks to a rewarding system by PPF, it is funded children are reportedly performing well above average and even with the nation wide mass failure last year, the ‘fund’s children’ apparently did exceptionally well.

The well performing fund proudly announces that, 3.7bn/- is paid to 25, 607 pensioners on a monthly basis and that the benefits are paid without any sell of assets or borrowing of money from other financial institution.

Lulu Mengele, the Public Relations and Marketing announced that from July 1st to July 5th this year, her security fund would have a ‘Customer Service Week’ where the general public is invited to have their questions answered by PPF directors who will avail themselves at PPF offices in Ilala, Temeke and Kinondoni.

PPF was established by the PPF Pensions Fund Act [Cap 372 R.E. 2002], with the objective of providing pension and other related benefits such as disability, survivor, withdrawal, education, gratuity, death and old age to all employees in the Parastatal and private sectors of the economy.

The fund was started in 1978 as part of the National Insurance Corporation with an initial capital of 50mn/- that value is now up to 1.3trn/-.

UDOM students volunteer to teach in ward schools

Several University of Dodoma students have promised to volunteer at various schools during their upcoming vacations.

In response to a call by former Prime Minister, Edward Lowassa who asked university students and alumni to step up to the many challenges facing the education system particularly the community secondary schools.

He was speaking to a host of students from the University of Dodoma (UDOM) who paid him a visit at his residence in the Dodoma Municipality on Monday evening.

The visiting students are among those who were studied in ward secondary schools built during Lowassa’s premiership in the national drive to increase enrolment.

Chairman of the students’ association, Victor Mbonica expressed extreme gratitude to the former PM on behalf of his colleagues. He pointed out that it is because of the community schools that they are now at the verge of completing their university degrees and to join the nation’s work force.

It is at this point that, on behalf of his accompanying students, he responded to Lowassa’s call urging them to help improve the community secondary schools.

Mbonica pledged that during their upcoming long vacation, he and many other UDOM students will volunteer at various community secondary schools in their respective districts and wards.

They however requested Lowassa, whom some reportedly bid to join the presidential race under the CCM ticket, to afford the schools funding in cash and kind noting that they lack books and other teaching materials and most do not have sufficient desks and chairs, factors that play a key part in students’ attendance and performance.

Schoolgirls need books, not husbands

PRIMARY school pupils  in Sumbawanga municipality have literally accused their parents to the acting Regional Commissioner (RC) for Rukwa, Mr Iddy Kimanta, for withdrawing some of their number in order to marry them off suitors, for a dowry.

The pupils, whose bitterness in connection with the maltreatment was reflected in a message that was read to the RC at a public rally in Kanondo village, appealed for comprehensive government intervention.

They were concerned that dropping out of school denied them education and that getting married at a tender age amounted to illegal child marriage.

Some parents, they claimed, force their daughters out of school so they can help out in household chores.

The RC also heard that some parents ordered their schooling daughters to look for casual labour so they help support the family financially. Some of the girls joined domestic servitude.

Other sought menial jobs as waiters in bars and guest houses. And there are those who join the rabid world of prostitution and fall prey to sexual predators.

The RC wa incensed, to say the least. He told the gathering that parents who would terminate the education of their children would meet the wrath of the law.

Marrying off young girls to husbands is an old tradition that can be traced back to numerous generations.It remains persistent today. 

The practice is one of the principal causes of the now numerous pregnancy complications in young mothers.

Most under-age marriages fail to work.Unfortunately, traditions are so powerful in many parts of Tanzania, especially among the Wamasai, Wakurya, Wahehe, Waha and Wahaya. Traditions also die hard among the Wagogo and Wasukuma.

Of particular concern to the state is the large number of pregnancy complications among young girls whose bodies are not yet ready to bear children.

These include the possibility of obstetric fistula. Women who have the fistula are often the very young girls who are married very early, before reaching the age of 15 years for example, who are too poor to attend health services and try to deliver at home.

These young mothers are also often ignorant about motherhood.An obstetric fistula can occur because the woman's pelvis is too small; the baby's head is too big or the baby is badly positioned; the woman can be in labour for five days or more without medical help and other unfortunate reasons.

In most cases the baby dies.If the mother survives, she is left with tissue damage to her birth canal that renders her incontinent-either of her bladder or bowel functions. This is the beginning of a medically pathetic situation for the young mother.

So, child marriages must be treated with the contempt they deserve.Schoolgirls need books--not husbands.

Wengi wafaulu kidato cha sita

Dar es Salaam. Baraza la Mitihani Nchini (Necta), limetangaza matokeo ya kidato cha sita ambapo asilimia 87.85 wamefaulu huku kundi la shule 20 za mwisho likitawaliwa na shule kongwe nchini na zile za Zanzibar.

Akitangaza matokeo hayo jana, Kaimu Katibu Mtendaji wa baraza hilo, Dk Charles Msonde, alisema watahiniwa 50,611 walifanya mtihani huo na kati yao 44,366 sawa na asilimia 87.85, wamefaulu.

Mwaka 2012 wanafunzi waliofaulu mtihani huo walikuwa ni 46,658 sawa na asilimia 87.65.

Watahiniwa wa shule

Dk Msonde alisema kuwa, watahiniwa wa shule waliofaulu ni 40,242 sawa na asilimia 93.92 ya waliofanya mtihani huo.

“Wasichana waliofaulu ni 13,286 sawa na asilimia 95.80 na wavulana 26,956 sawa na asilimia 93.03,” alisema.

Mwaka 2012 watahiniwa 40,775 sawa na asilimia 92.30 walifaulu mtihani huo.

Watahiniwa wa kujitegemea

Alisema kuwa, watahiniwa wa kujitegemea waliofanya mtihani huo walikuwa ni 7,659 na waliofaulu ni 4,124 sawa na asilimia 53.87.

Ufaulu katika kundi hili umeshuka ikilinganishwa na mwaka 2012 ambapo watahiniwa waliofaulu walikuwa ni 5,883 sawa na asilimia 64.96 ya wote waliofanya mitihani hiyo.

Ufaulu kwa madaraja

Matokeo hayo yanaonyesha kuwa, watahiniwa 325 sawa na asilimia 0.76 ya wote waliofanya mtihani huo walipata daraja la kwanza, kati yao wavulana wakiwa ni 188 sawa na asilimia 0.65 na wasichana 137 sawa na asilimia 0.99.

Waliopata daraja la pili ni 5,372 sawa na asilimia 12.54 wavulana wakiwa ni 3,142 sawa na asilimia 10.84 na wasichana 2,230 sawa na asilimia 16.08. 

Waliopata daraja la tatu ni 30,183 sawa na asilimia 70.45 wavulana wakiwa ni 20,442 sawa na asilimia 70.55 na wasichana 9,741 sawa na asilimia 70.24.

Watahiniwa waliopata daraja la nne 4,362 sawa na asilimia 10.18 ya wote waliofanya mtihani huo huku wavulana wakiwa ni 3,184 sawa na asilimia 10.99 na wasichana 1,178 sawa na asilimia 8.49.

Waliofeli ni 2,604 sawa na asilimia 6.08 wavulana wakiwa 2,021 sawa na asilimia 6.97 na wasichana 583 sawa na asilimia 4.20.

Shule za Zanzibar zaboronga

Matokeo hayo yanaonyesha kuwa, shule kutoka Zanzibar zimefanya vibaya ambapo katika kundi la shule 10 za mwisho zenye watahiniwa zaidi ya 30, saba zinatoka kwenye visiwa hivyo.

Kwa upande wa shule zenye watahiniwa chini ya 30, nne zinatoka Unguja huku shule nyingine kongwe zilizokuwa zikifanya vizuri mwaka huu zimevuta mkia.

Dk Msonde alisema kuwa, Necta imezuia matokeo ya watahiniwa 116 kutoka na sababu mbalimbali, 93 hawakulipa ada ya mtihani, 10 walipata matatizo ya kiafya na kushindwa kufanya baadhi ya mitihani na 17 walipata matatizo ya kiafya na hawakufanya mtihani hata mmoja.

Alisema pia kuwa, baraza hilo limefuta matokeo ya watahiniwa wanne kutokana na kubainika kufanya udanganyifu, kati yao mmoja akiwa ni mtahiniwa wa shule na watatu wa kujitegemea.

Wanafunzi Bora wazungumzia matokeo

SAID JUMA IRANDO2  

Dar es Salaam. Mwanafunzi bora wa kwanza kitaifa katika matokeo yaliyorekebishwa ya mtihani wa kidato cha nne uliofanyika mwaka 2012, Said Irando kutoka Shule ya Sekondari Feza ya jijini Dar es Salaam, ameeleza kushangazwa na matokeo hayo kwa kuwa hakuyatarajia.

Mwanafunzi huyo ambaye tayari ameshaanza masomo ya Kidato cha Tano katika Shule ya Sekondari Feza, alisema kuwa ingawa alisoma kwa bidii lakini hakudhani kama angeweza kushika nafasi ya kwanza kitaifa na kwamba anamini mafanikio yake kitaaluma yana ‘mkono wa Mungu’.

“Sikutegemea kabisa kuwa mwanafunzi bora, ingawa nilisoma kwa bidii kubwa nia yangu ilikuwa ni kutaka kufaulu tu; Ni Mungu amenisaidia,” alisema Irando.

Alisema kujituma katika masomo, mazingira mazuri ya kusomea na upatikanaji wa vifaa muhimu vya kujifunzia ndiyo yaliyomwezesha kusoma na kufanya vizuri.

Irando ambaye ni mtoto wa kwanza katika familia yenye watoto watatu, alisema kurekebishwa kwa matokeo ya kidato cha nne kulibadilisha alama za matokeo yake kutoka Daraja la kwanza akiwa na alama tisa hadi saba, zilizomfanya kuwa mwanafunzi bora kitaifa na mwafunzi bora wa kwanza kati ya wavulana kumi bora pia kitaifa.

Mwanafunzi huyo alibainisha kuwa pamoja na wazazi wake kuwa ni wafanyabiashara, yeye anatamani kuwa mhandisi ingawa bado hajajua atakuwa mhandisi katika tasnia gani.

“Natamani sana kuwa mhandisi hiyo ndiyo ndoto yangu ingawa bado sijajua nitakuwa mhandisi wa sekta gani,” alisema Irando.

Irando alisoma elimu ya msingi katika Shule ya Msingi J.K Nyerere ambako alifaulu na kuchaguliwa kujiunga na Sekondari Pugu, lakini wazazi wake waliamua kumpeleka Shule ya Sekondari Feza.

Naye mwanafunzi Joshua Azza kutoka Sekondari ya Wavulana Marian ambaye ameshika nafasi ya saba kitaifa kati ya wanafunzi kumi bora baada ya kupata daraja la kwanza akiwa na alama 11, alisema ameyapokea matokeo hayo kwa furaha akiamini atatimiza lengo lake la kuwa daktari wa upasuaji.

“Natarajia kuwa daktari wa upasuaji, kwa matokeo haya nadhani nitafanikiwa,” alisema Azza ambaye wazazi wake wote ni walimu alipozungumza na gazeti hili jana jijini Dar es Salaam.

Kwa upande wake Saidi Nchimbi kutoka Sekondari ya Feza, ambaye ameshika nafasi ya nane kati ya wanafunzi kumi bora kitaifa, alisema kuwa siku zote alikuwa akisoma kwa uwezo wake wote na kwamba alikuwa akitamani kufaulu kwenye mitihani yake yote aliyopewa.

Nchimbi amefanikiwa kushika nafasi hiyo baada ya kupata daraja la kwanza akiwa na alama nane. Katika matokeo ya awali mwanafunzi huyo alikuwa na alama 11.
